Built, repaired and returned to service from our yard at Sturrock Dock, Cape Town.

6Sigma Marine fabricates, repairs and refurbishes offshore containers and related cargo-carrying units at our yard in Table Bay Harbour. We work to the project specification and the standard the container must meet, typically DNV 2.7-1 (now DNV-ST-E271) or EN 12079, and we coordinate the independent certification each unit needs before it is lifted offshore.

New-Build Offshore Containers

Containers can be built to DNV 2.7-1 / DNV-ST-E271 or EN 12079 requirements, subject to project specification, design approval and third-party certification.

Each build covers fabrication, welding, blasting, coating, doors and seals, marking and data plates, with the documentation the certifying body requires.

Offshore Baskets, Skips and Racks

  • Cargo baskets and pipe baskets, with lashing points and drainage
  • Waste skips and cuttings skips
  • Tank frames and offshore tanks
  • Gas bottle racks, tool boxes and mini containers

Sizes, gross ratings and layouts are set by your specification and confirmed during design. Tell us what the unit must carry and where it will be lifted.

Lifting Sets

Four-leg lifting sets, shackles and master links are supplied with each unit or as replacements, with certificates matched to the container rating. Lifting sets are sourced through a certified rigging supplier.

Offshore Container Repair and Refurbishment

Damaged and worn containers come back to working condition in our yard, with the repair scope agreed with the owner and, where needed, the certifying body before work starts. The work is carried out through our container yard services at Sturrock Dock.

  • Damage assessment and repair scope
  • Frame, floor, wall and roof repairs, with cut-out and renewal of damaged steel
  • Pad-eye repair and renewal
  • Doors, seals, hinges and locking gear replaced
  • Blasting and repainting to your coating specification and colour scheme, with decals and markings
  • Data plates and marking renewed after inspection

Inspection and Recertification Support

Offshore containers need periodic inspection to stay in service. We prepare the unit, carry out the repairs found, and coordinate the inspection with an independent inspection body so the container can be re-marked and returned to you.

  • Visual inspection preparation and cleaning
  • NDT of pad eyes and critical welds (MPI, UT, DPI)
  • Proof load testing
  • Re-marking and certificate handover

Inspection intervals and test requirements depend on the standard and edition the container was certified to. We confirm these with the inspection body for each unit.

DNV 2.7-1, EN 12079 and ISO 10855: Standards We Work To

We build and repair to the standard set out in your specification. The ones we see most often are:

  • DNV 2.7-1 Offshore containers (current document DNV-ST-E271)
  • EN 12079 Offshore containers and associated lifting sets
  • ISO 10855-1:2018 Offshore containers and associated lifting sets, design, manufacture and marking
  • DNV-ST-E273 for portable offshore units outside the scope of 2.7-1

Certification is issued by the independent body named in your contract, not by 6Sigma.

Why 6Sigma

Steel fabrication, blasting and painting, lifting and fit-out happen in one Cape Town yard, under one contract and one project manager. You deal with a single point of responsibility from first drawing to certified unit, instead of managing a fabricator, a paint shop and an outfitter separately. Our East London office supports clients on the Eastern Cape coast.

Frequently Asked Questions

What standards are your offshore containers built to?

We build and repair to the standard in the project specification. Most often this is DNV 2.7-1 (now published as DNV-ST-E271), EN 12079 or ISO 10855-1. Certification is issued by the independent certifying body named in the contract, not by 6Sigma.

What types of offshore containers and units do you build?

Offshore cargo and dry containers, open-top and half-height containers, cargo and pipe baskets, waste and cuttings skips, gas bottle racks, tool boxes and mini containers, and service containers built as shells for workshop, office or accommodation fit-out. Sizes and ratings follow your specification.

Can you repair and recertify existing offshore containers?

Yes. We assess the damage, agree the repair scope with the owner and, where needed, the certifying body, repair frames, floors, walls, doors and pad eyes, then prepare the unit for inspection by an independent body so it can be re-marked and returned to service.

Where is the work done?

At our yard at Sturrock Dock, Table Bay Harbour, Cape Town, South Africa. Our East London office supports clients on the Eastern Cape coast.
