Sturrock Dock – Conditional Survey of intermediate Caisson Gate

TNPA has appointed 6Sigma Marine to provide a conditional survey of the Cape Town Sturrock Dock Intermediate caisson gate. The gate is over 70 years old and was in dire need of inspection and identification of the risks. The main risks were identified as the weight loss of years of corrosion of the steel. 6Sigma provided the ports authority with various options to extend its life until it will be replaced. The work included over 3000 NDT UT point, 3D scanning, Advisory on valve replacements, conditional assessment of the structure, microscopic lab tests on the unknown steel quality, FEA analysis to check the structural integrity and advisory on the maximum life extension.
